Loose Materials from Scrapbooks 6-21
Scope and Contents
Twenty-one scrapbooks of Norfolk and Virginia Beach-related genealogy, the history of Norfolk and the Hampton Roads region, and the construction of tunnels and highways in the 1950s-1960s in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Five scrapbooks cover genealogy, five scrapbooks cover general history (international, national, state, and local), and the remaining 11 scrapbooks cover Norfolk and Hampton Roads history. Four of the genealogy scrapbooks primarily focus on the Thoroughgood family, while the remaining genealogy scrapbook centers on the Whitehurst family. The Norfolk and Hampton Roads history scrapbooks are divided thus: three scrapbooks on highways, three scrapbooks on tunnels, three scrapbooks on Norfolk, one scrapbook on General MacArthur and the formation of the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, and one scrapbook specific to the history of Jamestown. Many of the newspaper clippings in the scrapbooks feature maps of the Hampton Roads region showing roadways, tunnel and bridge construction, and other developments in the local area.
