Topics are separated by theme: A. history of Norfolk banks, B. tunnels, bridges, and highways, C. other career items, D. banking, especially when MacKethan was President of the Trust Division of the American Bankers Association, and E. MacKethan's campaign for election to the Virginia House of Delegates. Most of the materials date from the 1950s to 1971.

Scope and Contents Clippings scrapbooks of news and advertisements from the Home Federal Savings and Loan Association, primarily from 1957-1971. The collection includes photographs of the main branch and auxiliary branches of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association as well as staff. One 1861-1873 bank ledger from the Merchants and Mechanics Savings Bank in Norfolk, Virginia. The ledger lists the date along with names of individuals and numeric amounts. The ledger ranges in date from September 30, 1861 to November 18, 1863 with a gap until October 1, 1870 to August 3, 1873 and was likely written by bank cashier William Henry Wales.
